How to Wash Your Beard the Right Way

How to Wash Your Beard the Right Way

Wash your beard 2 to 3 times a week using a gentle, sulfate-free beard wash, rinse with warm water instead of hot, and follow with a conditioner. Washing every day tends to strip the natural oils your skin makes, which leaves the hair dry and the skin underneath flaky. A few well-timed washes keep things clean without wrecking that balance.

How often should you wash your beard?

For most guys, 2 to 3 times a week is the sweet spot. Beard hair sits over facial skin that produces sebum, and that oil is what keeps the beard soft and the skin calm. Wash too often and you rinse it all away faster than your body can replace it.

If you work outside, sweat a lot, or hit the gym daily, you can rinse with plain warm water on the off days and save the actual wash for when the beard feels dirty or heavy.

Why use a sulfate-free beard wash?

Regular hair shampoo is built for the scalp, and a lot of it uses harsh sulfates that clean aggressively. On facial hair, that same strength dries out the skin and can leave your beard brittle. A sulfate-free beard wash lifts dirt and buildup while leaving enough natural oil behind to keep the hair pliable.

You can find a gentle option in our Beard Wash and Conditioner collection, which is made for beard hair rather than the top of your head.

Should you use hot or warm water?

Warm, not hot. Hot water strips oil quickly and can irritate the skin under a thick beard. Warm water opens things up enough to rinse away buildup while keeping the beard's moisture intact. Finish with a cooler rinse if you want to help the hair lie flat.

Do you need to condition after washing?

Yes. Washing removes oil, so conditioning puts softness and moisture back. A conditioner smooths the hair, cuts down on tangles, and makes the beard easier to comb. Right after a wash is the best time to do it, while the hair is still damp and open.

Once your beard is towel-dried, you can lock in that softness with beard butter and a few drops of beard oil.

How do you dry your beard without damaging it?

Pat, don't scrub. Rubbing a towel back and forth roughs up the hair and creates frizz. Press the towel gently to soak up water, then let the beard air-dry or use a comb to shape it while it is still slightly damp.
