Do You Wash Beard Butter Out or Leave It In?

Do You Wash Beard Butter Out or Leave It In?

Leave it in. Beard butter is a leave-in conditioner, so you work it through your beard and let it stay there all day. There is no rinse step. Rinsing would strip out the exact butters and oils that soften your hair and calm the skin, which defeats the point of using it.

Why is beard butter a leave-in?

Butter is built to condition your beard while you go about your day. Our Beard Butter is wax-free and made with a compound of macadamia, jojoba, kukui, and avocado butters, plus cloudberry seed oil. Those ingredients need time on the hair and skin to do their job. Wash them out and you lose the softening and the moisture you just applied.

How is it different from a wash-out conditioner?

A rinse-out conditioner is meant for the shower. You apply it, wait a minute, and rinse. Beard butter works the other way. It stays put so it can keep conditioning for hours, not seconds. Think of it like a lotion for your beard rather than something you clean off. If you rinse it after a minute, you get almost none of the benefit.

When should you put it on?

After a shower, on a towel-dried beard. Slightly damp hair helps the butter spread and lock in moisture. Scoop a small amount, rub it between your palms until it melts, and work it down to the skin and through to the ends. Then style with a comb or brush and go. The butter keeps conditioning quietly for the rest of the day, which is exactly what you want from a leave-in.

So when does it come off?

Only when you wash your beard next, using a proper beard wash. That is the point where you reset and start clean. Between washes, the butter stays in and keeps working. If your beard feels dry before your next wash day, add a touch more butter rather than rinsing anything out.

Can you leave it in overnight?

Yes. Leaving butter in overnight gives it more time to soften coarse hair and settle the skin. Use a light amount so your pillow does not get greasy. In the morning your beard should feel softer and easier to shape.
