What Order Do Beard Products Go In?

Wash and condition first, then apply beard butter, then finish with beard oil to seal. That is the official Noble order. Why does the order matter?

Each step sets up the next one.

Washing clears out dirt and buildup so the conditioning layers can actually absorb. Butter goes next because it is the heavier of the two and it needs direct skin contact to soften the hair and calm what is underneath. Oil comes last because its job is to seal.

Flip the last two and the oil forms a barrier before the butter ever reaches your skin. The butter ends up sitting on the outside of your beard doing very little, which is a waste of a good product.

Step one: wash and condition

Start clean. Use a beard wash to clear grime and buildup, then condition.

How often you wash depends on your day rather than a fixed number. Sweat through a shift, work outside, or hit the gym and you should wash it. A quiet day at a desk and a warm water rinse will usually do. Product is a factor too. Butter and oil pull dirt out of the air all day long, so if you use them daily you need to wash more often than someone who uses nothing.

The part that is not optional: if you wash, you condition. Every time. Washing takes the natural oils off your skin and hair, and those oils are what protect you from wind and cold. Strip them and put nothing back and you have made things worse, not cleaner.

Step two: beard butter

On a towel-dried beard that is still slightly damp, scoop a small amount of butter and melt it between your palms.

Work it down to the skin with your fingertips first, then pull it out through the hair. Butter first is the rule because it conditions both the skin and the beard, softening coarse hair and settling the itch underneath. Take a few extra seconds on the neck and cheeks, not just the front where you can see it. The skin is where most beard problems start and it is the part everybody skips.

Step three: beard oil to seal

Finish with a few drops of beard oil. Rub it between your hands and pull it through from root to tip.

The oil seals in the moisture the butter just delivered and leaves a clean, low shine. This is the layer that keeps your beard from drying out over the course of the day. Do you need all the steps every day?

No. Washing depends on whether you got dirty. Butter and oil can be daily, and for most guys they should be.

On a rushed morning, butter then oil is enough to keep the beard soft and shaped. Build the full routine on the days you have the time. The routine only works if you actually keep it, so a short one you do every day beats a thorough one you do twice a month.
